This kiln dates from the construction of the canal in this locality in the early 1790s. It was supplied with limestone from Rainhall Quarry and was shut down at the same time as the quarry closed in the late 1860s. It has been extensively rebuilt/restored a few years ago as can be seen from the image below taken when the works were being undertaken. There is some rather dodgy stonework in the newer sections that were completely rebuilt and the finished job is a mess and does not represent the kiln whn built.

I am grateful to Barry Clare for supplying details and the images of this kiln.
